Understanding Motivational Interviewing Therapy

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a goal-oriented, client-centered approach that aims to facilitate behavioral change by helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence toward their problem behaviors. Our motivational interviewing therapy program is grounded in this evidence-based practice, which has been shown to be effective in treating addiction and other behavioral health issues.

MI therapy takes a non-confrontational, empathetic stance towards clients, recognizing that individuals are ultimately responsible for their own behavior. Through open-ended questions, reflective listening, and affirmation of clients’ strengths and abilities, therapists encourage self-exploration and self-discovery, guiding clients toward their own reasons for change.

The Principles of MI Therapy

The core principles of MI therapy include:

  • Expressing empathy: Therapists strive to understand and accept the client’s perspective without judgment or criticism.
  • Developing discrepancy: Clients are encouraged to explore discrepancies between their current behavior and their desired goals, helping them realize the need for change.
  • Rolling with resistance: Instead of confronting or challenging resistance, therapists acknowledge and validate it while guiding clients toward their own motivations for change.

These principles work together to create a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their motivations and make meaningful changes in their lives.

Going Through the Treatment Process

Motivational interviewing therapy for women works around four essential assumptions:

  1. Counselors assume that ambivalence about substance abuse is an obstacle.
  2. They believe that people have a natural sense of motivation that can help them overcome this ambivalence.
  3. The therapist-client relationship is a collaborative relationship.
  4. Counselors believe that an understanding, direct approach can help people to change.

While each person is different, there are some common stages that individuals go through in motivational interviewing.

MI Therapy Stages

During MI therapy for addiction, counselors will help people work through the following stages:

  • Precontemplation: The individual has not realized that they need to change yet. They have no desire to change and do not believe that it is necessary.
  • Contemplation: This stage starts when someone realizes they have a problem, but they do not see a solution for their difficulties yet.
  • Preparation: In this stage, the individual thinks about the steps that they need to take. They may still have doubts or negativity, but they can work on these feelings during motivational interviewing.
  • Action: Now, the client is ready to make changes. They may still feel uncertain or skeptical.
  • Maintenance: During this stage, the individual maintains their new, healthy behaviors. They stick to these behaviors for relapse prevention.

Our gender-specific treatment program at The Willows at Red Oak Recovery® takes into account the unique needs and experiences of women in recovery. Our motivational interviewing therapy program is just one aspect of our holistic approach to helping young women heal from addiction and build fulfilling lives in recovery.
